Position-Specific Football Recruiting Measurables

A measurable is useful when a coach knows what was tested, how it was tested, when it happened, and whether the athlete's film supports the trait. A number without context is marketing. A repeatable number with context is information.

There is no universal chart that guarantees a college level. Programs value different schemes, frames, movement skills, production, development paths, academics, and roster needs.

What to do next

Choose three position-relevant tests and one football-skill indicator. Record the date, surface, equipment, method, result, and who observed it. Use the Position Measurables Testing Log to create a clean history instead of a collection of best guesses.

RepMax athletes can update accurate athletic information on their player card.

Start with six evaluation buckets

Size and frame

Height, weight, length, hand size, and body composition may matter differently by position. Record honest current numbers and the measurement method. Do not round into a different athlete.

Speed

Forty-yard time, flying sprints, or game-speed tracking can describe different qualities. Hand timing and electronic timing are not interchangeable.

Acceleration and change of direction

Short splits, shuttle tests, and three-cone work can add context, but setup and technique heavily influence results.

Power

Vertical jump, broad jump, and position-appropriate strength work can show explosiveness. Training numbers should be recorded safely and with the testing protocol.

Position skill

Accuracy, snap consistency, release speed, coverage transitions, blocking movement, ball production, tackling space, and other football actions usually require film—not just a spreadsheet.

Production and competition context

Stats need role, games played, opponent quality, scheme, and opportunity context. Production can prompt evaluation; it does not replace film.

Match the test to the position question

Position group	Useful physical context	Film must still show
Quarterback	Height, weight, movement, verified velocity if available	Accuracy, timing, anticipation, pocket response, decisions
Running back	Speed, acceleration, power, change of direction	Vision, contact balance, protection, receiving, ball security
Receiver / tight end	Speed, length, jumps, movement	Release, separation, hands, routes, blocking, contested catches
Offensive line	Height, weight, length, power, short-area movement	Feet, leverage, hands, recovery, assignment execution
Defensive line / edge	Frame, length, get-off, power, change of direction	Strike, separation, rush plan, anchor, pursuit
Linebacker	Speed, short-area movement, frame, power	Read steps, coverage, fits, tackling, communication
Defensive back	Speed, length, jumps, change of direction	Transitions, leverage, ball skills, tackling, recovery
Specialist	Operation time, distance, hang time, accuracy, consistency	Repeatable technique under game conditions

These are categories to document, not universal cutoffs. Ask each staff what it prioritizes in its scheme.

Test so the next result means something

Use the same distance, surface, footwear, warmup, start rule, timing method, and rest when comparing results over time. Record whether a time was hand-timed, laser-timed, or drawn from another verified system. Keep ordinary results as well as best results so progress remains credible.

Do not chase a testing number through unsafe weight change, poor lifting form, insufficient recovery, or repeated maximal attempts. Coaches, qualified strength professionals, athletic trainers, and medical professionals should guide training and health decisions.

Fictional composite scenario: Sam owns the context

Fictional composite example. Sam, a linebacker, lists a 4.61 forty from a hand-timed practice but cannot remember the surface or timer. At a camp, electronic timing produces a slower result.

Instead of hiding it, Sam starts a consistent log, improves the first ten yards, and pairs the update with full-game clips showing pursuit angles, coverage movement, and tackling. The new record is less flashy than the original claim and far more useful.

Present numbers without overclaiming

Use language such as “electronically timed at [event] on [date]” or “coach-measured at school.” If a number is self-recorded, say so. Update old information and remove a result you cannot explain.

Film should make the number believable. A fast time cannot repair poor football decisions, and excellent football film should not be hidden because one test is still developing.

How RepMax supports the work

RepMax lets athletes maintain accurate athlete-entered athletic and profile information on a player card. RepMax does not verify measurables, set recruiting standards, test athletes, or predict a college level.

Build a credible athletic record

Measure what matters for the role, test it consistently, keep the context, and show the football skill on film. The goal is not a perfect chart. It is information a coach can understand and trust.
