NCAA Eligibility for Football Recruits: Start Here

A recruiting conversation cannot repair four years of ignored course planning.

That is why eligibility belongs at the beginning of a football recruiting plan—not at the end.

The NCAA Eligibility Center reviews academic and athletics information for students who want to compete at NCAA schools. The requirements and certification process differ by division, and a high school's graduation requirements are not automatically the same as NCAA initial-eligibility requirements.

This page gives families an organized starting point. It does not replace a decision from the NCAA Eligibility Center or a college compliance office.

Reviewed July 20, 2026. Read the current requirements at the NCAA Eligibility Center before making individual decisions.

The first five actions

Tell the high school counselor that the student plans to pursue college athletics.
Review the high school's official list of NCAA-approved core courses.
Create the appropriate NCAA Eligibility Center account.
Track core courses and the core-course GPA every semester.
Monitor the account for transcript, sports participation and certification tasks.

What the NCAA reviews

Academic eligibility

The academic review may include NCAA-approved core courses, core-course grades, transcripts, proof of graduation and division-specific requirements.

The NCAA core-course GPA uses approved core courses. It may not match the GPA printed on the high school transcript.

Athletics eligibility

The athletics review can include sports participation, teams, events, expenses, awards, advisers and people who marketed the athlete's skills. Answer sports-participation questions accurately and keep supporting records.

Division I requirements at a glance

As reviewed July 20, 2026, the NCAA states that a Division I-bound student generally must:

create an Academic and Athletics Certification account;
complete 16 NCAA-approved core-course credits in the required subject distribution;
complete 10 core courses before the seventh semester, including seven in English, math or science;
earn at least a 2.3 core-course GPA;
graduate on time;
submit the final transcript with proof of graduation;
receive academic and athletics certification.

The NCAA explains that Division I students generally must complete the 16 core courses within eight semesters from the initial start of ninth grade. Families should review exceptions and individual circumstances directly with the Eligibility Center and the recruiting college's compliance office.

Division II and Division III are different

The NCAA currently lists a minimum 2.2 core-course GPA for Division II and requires Division II-bound students to complete the applicable 16 core courses before initial full-time college enrollment.

Division III schools establish their own admissions and academic standards. The Eligibility Center has a more limited role for Division III, including athletics certification for international students.

Do not apply a Division I checklist to every school on the list. Confirm the division and current requirement.

Standardized test reminder

The NCAA reports that Divisions I and II removed standardized test scores from initial-eligibility requirements for students initially enrolling full time on or after August 1, 2023.

That does not mean a college has removed tests from admissions, placement, scholarship or other institutional decisions. Check each college separately.

Core courses: the detail families miss

Not every class that counts for high school graduation is an NCAA-approved core course.

Use the NCAA Eligibility Center's high school portal to review your school's approved course list. Work with the counselor before changing schedules or relying on credit recovery, online classes, repeated courses or courses taken outside the high school.

Save copies of schedules, transcripts and relevant coursework records.

When to register

Families can begin with the free Profile Page account when appropriate and move to the certification account required for specific Division I or II steps. The correct timing depends on the athlete's stage and target schools.

The NCAA notes that a completed certification account is generally required before certain Division I official-visit and athletics-aid steps and before competing at a Division I or II school.

Use the Eligibility Center's current account guidance rather than relying on an old recruiting checklist.

Your annual eligibility check

At least once each school year, review:

current graduation year and contact information;
approved core courses completed;
courses planned for the next term;
core-course GPA;
transcript submissions;
open Eligibility Center tasks;
sports participation history;
target college divisions;
questions for the high school counselor;
questions for a college compliance office.

Ask for help early

Contact the NCAA Eligibility Center or the athletics compliance office at a school recruiting the athlete when facts are unclear.

Ask early if the student has:

transferred high schools;
taken nontraditional or online courses;
repeated or reclassified a school year;
enrolled in college courses;
studied internationally;
received education-impacting disability accommodations;
delayed college enrollment;
participated with teams or received benefits that may require review.

Individual circumstances deserve individual guidance.

A counselor conversation worth having

Instead of asking, “Am I eligible?” bring the counselor a more useful list: the athlete's target divisions, current transcript, planned senior courses and the high school's NCAA-approved course list. Ask which courses still need confirmation and who will submit official records.

That conversation does not certify eligibility. It helps the family identify questions early enough to take them to the NCAA Eligibility Center or a recruiting college's compliance office.

Track eligibility beside the recruiting profile

The RepMax Player Profile can help families keep the athlete's public academic summary current, but it is not an eligibility certification system. Official transcripts and certification tasks belong in the NCAA's process.

Use RepMax to present accurate academic information to coaches. Use the NCAA Eligibility Center and college compliance staff to confirm eligibility.
