How to Make a Football Highlight Video Coaches Can Evaluate

Your football highlight video has one job: help a college coach evaluate you.

It does not need a dramatic soundtrack. It does not need a two-minute introduction. And it does not need every good play you have ever made.

It needs current footage, strong position-relevant plays and a clear answer to one question: should this coach keep evaluating this athlete?

What to do next

Run your current video through the Highlight Film Checklist before sending another coach email. RepMax athletes can then add or update the finished video link in the Film Room.

Start with the best plays

Do not save the strongest clips for a dramatic finish. Put them first.

The opening group should quickly show the traits most relevant to your position. A quarterback might lead with accuracy, decision-making and movement. An offensive lineman might lead with footwork, leverage and finish. A defensive back might show coverage, recovery speed, tackling and ball skills.

Ask your high school coach to help select the plays. The most exciting play to a fan is not always the most useful play to an evaluator.

Build a clear opening screen

Before the first snap, show:

full name;
graduation year;
high school and state;
position;
jersey number;
height and weight;
GPA where appropriate;
athlete contact information;
high school coach contact information;
link to the complete recruiting profile.

Keep the screen readable. A coach should be able to pause it and capture the information.

Identify the athlete before every play

Use a simple circle, arrow or shadow before the snap. Remove it before the action begins.

Start the clip early enough for the coach to see alignment and context. Do not cut so tightly that the athlete's assignment or reaction becomes impossible to interpret.

Use game footage as the foundation

For most football positions, game film shows how an athlete moves, reads, reacts and executes against competition. Skills footage can supplement the evaluation, particularly for specialists or when a coach requests specific drills, but it should not disguise a lack of current game film.

Keep full-game links available. A coach who likes the highlights may want to see down-to-down consistency, effort away from the ball and how the athlete responds after a mistake.

Choose plays by position

Quarterback

Show multiple throws, ball placement, timing, movement in the pocket, decision-making and the ability to create without turning every clip into a scramble reel.

Running back

Show vision, burst, change of direction, contact balance, pass protection and receiving ability—not only untouched long runs.

Wide receiver and tight end

Show releases, route variety, separation, hands, body control, blocking and production after the catch.

Offensive line

Show stance, first step, leverage, hand placement, movement, pass protection, pulls and the ability to finish legally. Use angles that let a coach see technique.

Defensive line and linebacker

Show get-off, hands, block recognition, pursuit, tackling, pass rush, coverage responsibility where relevant and repeated effort.

Defensive back

Show coverage technique, transitions, ball skills, recovery, open-field tackling and communication—not only interceptions.

Kicker, punter and long snapper

Use consistent skills footage with useful angles, visible distances or operation context, and enough repetitions to evaluate consistency.

Keep the editing simple

Avoid:

music that distracts from the film;
slow motion that hides game speed;
speed changes;
elaborate transitions;
long title sequences;
tiny text;
clips with no athlete identifier;
repeated angles of the same play unless the second angle adds evaluation value.

Clean cuts and clear labels are enough.

Coach-friendly versus distracting

A coach-friendly opening gives the athlete's name, class, position, school, accurate measurables and contact details on one readable screen, then moves directly to the strongest play. A distracting opening spends 30 seconds on animation and music before the coach knows whom to watch.

The same contrast applies inside each clip: a brief marker before the snap helps; a circle that follows the athlete throughout the play blocks the action.

How long should the video be?

There is no magic length that fixes weak film. A focused video of strong, relevant plays is better than a long video padded with routine snaps.

As a practical editing target, many recruiting guides recommend roughly three to five minutes or approximately 20 to 25 strong plays. Treat that as guidance, not a rule. The right length depends on position, available footage and what a specific coach asks to see.

Use a simple film scorecard

Before publishing, answer yes or no:

Are the best plays first?
Is the athlete identified before every clip?
Can the coach see alignment and context?
Does the film show multiple position traits?
Is the game speed unchanged?
Is the opening information current?
Does every link work on a phone?
Is full-game film available if requested?
Has the high school coach reviewed the final cut?
Is this version better than the one it replaces?

If the answer is no, fix the film before sending the next round of coach emails.

Share the film with context

Do not send a naked link.

Tell the coach your name, graduation year, position, school and why you are contacting that program. Include the profile link so academics, measurables and contact information sit beside the film.

Keep film current

Update the video when new footage materially improves the evaluation. During the season, a shorter midseason update may be useful. After the season, build the strongest complete version.

The RepMax Player Profile helps you keep the current film connected to the rest of the athlete's recruiting information. One updated link is easier to manage than old versions scattered across emails and social accounts.
