How to Email a College Football Coach

A college coach does not need your life story in the first email.

The coach needs enough information to answer three questions:

Who are you?
Why are you contacting this program?
Where can the staff evaluate your film, academics and measurables?

The best recruiting emails make those answers obvious.

What to do next

Copy the template that matches your situation, replace every bracketed field and add one genuine reason for contacting that program. Signed-in RepMax athletes can use the athlete dashboard for available outreach tools.

What to put in the subject line

Use searchable facts, not hype.

Format: Graduation Year + Position + Name + High School/State + Useful Update

Examples:

2027 QB Jordan Lee | Westview HS, CA | Junior Film
2028 OL Marcus Hill | 6'4", 285 | Spring Film and Transcript
2027 K/P Devin Ross | Verified Camp Results | Full Profile

Only include numbers you can support. Avoid subject lines such as "Next Big Star," "Must Watch" or "Future All-American."

The five-part recruiting email

1. Address the right coach

Research the staff directory. Position coaches and recruiting-area coaches may be relevant, but responsibilities change. Confirm the current staff before sending.

2. Introduce yourself

Give your name, graduation year, position, high school and location in one sentence.

3. Explain why the program fits your list

Mention something specific and honest: an academic program, development approach, position use, campus opportunity or conversation with the staff.

Generic praise is easy to recognize. One specific reason is enough.

4. Provide evaluation information

Share one current profile link containing the film, measurables, academics and contact information. If you include a direct film link too, label it clearly.

5. Ask one useful question

Ask what the staff needs next, whether the coach recommends a specific camp, or whether your film fits the program's current evaluation needs.

Introductory email template

Subject: 2027 LB Jordan Lee | Westview HS, CA | Junior Film

Coach [Last Name],

My name is Jordan Lee. I am a 2027 linebacker at Westview High School in San Diego, California.

I am researching [College] because of its [specific academic program, football development approach or other genuine reason]. I would appreciate the opportunity to be evaluated by your staff.

My current profile includes junior film, academic information, measurables and my high school coach's contact information:

[RepMax profile link]

Based on my current film, is there anything else your staff would like to evaluate?

Thank you for your time,

Jordan Lee 2027 | Linebacker Westview High School [Phone] | [Email]

Why each line exists

Subject line: lets the coach identify and search for the athlete.
Opening sentence: establishes class, position, school and location without a long biography.
Program-specific reason: proves the message was written for this school.
Profile link: puts film, academics, measurables and contacts in one place.
Useful question: gives the coach a specific, low-pressure way to respond.
Signature: repeats the information needed to find the athlete later.

Camp email template

Coach [Last Name],

I am a 2027 wide receiver at Westview High School, and I have registered for your prospect camp on [date]. [College] is on my target list because [specific reason].

My current film and complete information are here:

I look forward to competing at camp. Is there a specific position group or session you recommend I confirm before arriving?

Thank you,

Jordan Lee [Phone] | [Email]

Meaningful update template

Subject: 2027 DB Jordan Lee | Updated Midseason Film and GPA

Coach [Last Name],

I wanted to share two updates since my last email: I added new midseason varsity film and my current GPA is now [GPA]. Both are updated in my profile:

[RepMax profile link]

I remain interested in [College] because [brief, specific reason]. Would your staff like a full-game link or any additional academic information?

Thank you,

Jordan Lee [Phone] | [Email]

How to follow up

Do not send "just checking in" every few days.

Follow up when you can add information or ask a relevant question. If the first email received no response, send a short follow-up that keeps the original thread intact and restates the profile link.

Example:

Coach [Last Name],

I am following up on the profile and junior film I sent below. [College] remains on my target list because [reason]. I would appreciate any feedback on whether my current film fits your evaluation needs for the 2027 class.

Thank you,

Jordan Lee

If there is still no response, continue developing and broaden the school list. Repeated silence is not a reason to send repeated pressure.

Common email mistakes

Sending the same generic paragraph to every program.
Asking a coach to "check out my film" without identifying the athlete.
Attaching large video files.
Sending old or broken links.
Making claims the film does not support.
Letting a parent write in the athlete's voice.
Using slang, demands or excessive emojis.
Ignoring academics and high school coach contact details.
Writing a long autobiography before the profile link.

Let the athlete lead

Parents can help research programs, proofread and organize the tracker. The athlete should send the email from an appropriate address and be prepared to respond.

Communication is part of the evaluation. A concise, respectful email demonstrates initiative and maturity.

Make every email lead to current information

The RepMax Player Profile gives you one link for film, measurables, academics and contact details. Update the profile, and the coach sees the current version without searching through old attachments.
