How College Football Scholarships Work

The phrase "football scholarship" sounds simple.

The actual financial decision is not.

An athlete may be considering athletic aid, academic scholarships, need-based grants, institutional aid, loans, family contribution and a roster opportunity—all at the same time. The amount, renewal terms and rules vary by school, division and program.

So the most useful question is not, "Did you get a scholarship?"

It is, "What is the complete written financial and roster opportunity?"

Start with the division

NCAA Division I

Division I scholarship and roster rules changed beginning with the 2025-26 academic year as schools implemented the House settlement framework.

The NCAA states that Division I schools opting into the settlement no longer operate under the former sport-specific scholarship limits and instead work within sport roster limits and the settlement's broader benefit structure. Football programs may differ in how much aid they offer and how they allocate it.

Because implementation and institutional participation matter, families should not rely on an old chart that simply lists a universal football scholarship number. Ask each school how its current model works.

NCAA Division II

Division II football programs may offer athletic aid, often distributed across multiple athletes. An offer may cover part of the cost and can be combined with other aid when allowed.

NCAA Division III

Division III schools do not award athletic scholarships. Student-athletes may still receive academic, need-based and other institutional aid under the school's policies.

No athletic scholarship does not automatically mean no viable financial package. Compare the actual net cost.

NAIA and junior college

NAIA and junior college programs may offer athletic aid under their association, institution and program rules. Confirm eligibility, aid limits and renewal terms with the school and the relevant governing body.

Full scholarship, partial scholarship and total package

Do not assume "full" and "partial" have identical meanings across conversations.

Ask what the award covers:

tuition;
required fees;
housing;
meals;
books or course materials;
cost-of-attendance components;
summer school;
other permissible benefits.

Then ask what remains for the family to pay.

Athletic aid is one part of the equation

A college package may include:

athletic aid;
academic or merit awards;
need-based grants;
federal or state aid;
institutional scholarships;
outside scholarships;
work-study;
student or parent loans.

The best comparison uses net cost after grants and scholarships, not the largest headline award.

Offer size and family net cost are different numbers

Consider two fictional offers. College A lists $24,000 in combined grants and scholarships against $48,000 in estimated annual costs, leaving an estimated $24,000 family net cost. College B lists only $18,000 in aid, but its estimated annual cost is $34,000, leaving an estimated $16,000 family net cost.

College A has the larger award. College B has the lower estimated cost. Neither number decides the choice by itself, but the comparison prevents the family from mistaking a bigger scholarship label for a better financial outcome.

Questions to ask about every football offer

Financial questions

What is the exact award for the first academic year?
Which expenses does it cover?
Is the amount renewable, and under what conditions?
Can it change because of athletics performance, roster status, injury, coaching change or other circumstances?
What academic or need-based aid is included?
What is the estimated family cost after all grants and scholarships?
Are summer terms covered?
What deadlines or documents remain?

Football questions

What roster status is being offered?
Is the opportunity tied to a specific position?
How many athletes are currently in that position group?
What development plan does the staff see?
Who made the offer, and who can explain its terms?
What happens if the athlete is injured or the coaching staff changes?

Academic and life questions

Does the school offer the intended major?
What academic support is available?
Can the student afford to remain if football ends?
Would the student still choose the college without the team?

Verbal conversations are not the final document

Coach interest, a verbal offer and written financial aid are not interchangeable.

Be appreciative and direct. Ask when the family will receive written information, which office issues it and what conditions apply. Read the institution's documents carefully and direct individual questions to the coach, financial aid office and athletics compliance staff.

Do not announce terms publicly that the family does not fully understand.

Compare opportunities side by side

Create one worksheet for every serious option:

Category	School A	School B	School C
Written grants and scholarships
Estimated annual net cost
Renewal terms
Position and roster status
Academic program
Development plan
Campus and personal fit
If football ends, would I stay?

Use the same categories for each school. A larger athletic award can still produce a higher net cost.

Keep the recruiting profile accurate

Your RepMax Player Profile helps a staff evaluate the athlete's film, academics and measurables. It should never claim an offer that has not been made or misrepresent the terms of one.

Use the profile to support evaluation. Use official written documents and direct conversations to make the financial decision.
