How and When to Follow Up With College Football Coaches

Following up is not bothering a coach when the message is relevant, concise, and respectful. The problem is not the second email. The problem is sending the same empty message six times.

A good follow-up gives the coach a reason to reopen the evaluation: new film, an academic update, a schedule, an event plan, a requested document, or one clear question.

What to do next

Open your last message. Confirm that the film and profile links work, then choose one genuine update or question. Use the Coach Follow-Up Templates and record the date you sent it.

RepMax athletes can open the athlete dashboard to use available outreach tools and review available outreach activity. RepMax does not automate follow-ups or guarantee delivery or response.

Before following up, fix the first email

The original message should identify the athlete, graduation year, high school, position, academic context, and reason for contacting that program. It should include one current profile or film link and one useful question.

If the first email was unclear or had a broken link, correct that directly. Do not pretend the coach missed a perfect message.

Use a flexible follow-up cadence

There is no universal schedule that fits every program. A practical starting point is:

Send the personalized introduction.
If no response, send one concise reminder after several business days.
Follow again when there is a meaningful update, not simply because another day passed.
After repeated relevant attempts, ask one direct status question.
If the staff does not respond or says the fit is not current, reduce the frequency and invest in other programs.

During busy seasons, evaluation periods, games, camps, staff changes, and travel can slow responses. Silence is not a promise to wait forever.

Four follow-ups that add value

New film

Coach [Last Name], I added three games of junior film to my profile, including snaps at [position/role]. Here is the current link: [profile]. Is there another type of film that would help your evaluation?

Academic update

Coach [Last Name], I finished the semester with a [GPA/context] and updated my academic information. [College] remains on my list because [specific reason]. Is there an admissions benchmark you recommend I review with my counselor?

Schedule or event update

Coach [Last Name], our next game is [date/opponent], and I plan to attend [event] on [date]. My current profile and film are here: [link]. Will your staff be evaluating at that event?

Direct status question

Coach [Last Name], thank you for reviewing my information. I am organizing my next round of visits and events. Where do I currently stand in your evaluation process, and what would you need to see for me to move forward?

Composite example: Riley stops repeating the same ask

Fictional example. Riley sends an introduction on Monday and follows up the next morning with “Just checking in.” Three days later, Riley sends the same line again. There is no new information and no response.

Riley pauses, updates the film link after Friday's game, and sends one message explaining the new clips and asking whether the staff wants full-game film. The message is easier to answer because it contains evidence and a specific question. Riley then records the attempt and continues contacting other realistic programs.

Know when to stop or change direction

Stop frequent follow-up when a coach asks you to, the program says it is not recruiting your class or position, the college no longer fits, or several relevant messages receive no response. A polite final update can keep the door open without consuming the entire recruiting plan.

Never use guilt, demand an evaluation, exaggerate another offer, send daily messages, or contact unrelated staff members with identical copy.

Track outreach simply

For each program record the contact, date, message purpose, link sent, response, requested action, and next follow-up date. This prevents accidental repetition and helps families see where communication is becoming more specific.

How RepMax supports the work

RepMax provides available athlete dashboard outreach tools, including emailing a college program through available contacts or a manually entered program email and reviewing available outreach activity. It does not write, personalize, schedule, or automatically follow up on messages.

Make the next message useful

The goal of follow-up is not to force an answer. It is to make the next evaluation step easy to understand. Share real progress, ask a question the coach can answer, and keep building other options.
