Football Recruiting Timeline by Graduation Year

Football recruiting rarely moves in a straight line.

One athlete receives early attention. Another grows late, adds strong senior film and finds the right program after classmates have committed. A third discovers that a different division offers the better academic, financial and developmental fit.

That is why a useful timeline should create direction without pretending every athlete follows the same clock.

Use this guide to identify the work that belongs in the current year. Then verify recruiting-calendar and eligibility details with official sources, because rules can change.

Freshman year: build the foundation

The goal is not to collect offers. The goal is to create habits and information that make later evaluation possible.

Football priorities

Learn the position and earn the best film available.
Ask coaches what skills and physical development should be prioritized.
Begin recording accurate height, weight and testing results.
Save complete game film when possible.

Academic priorities

Tell the school counselor that college athletics is a goal.
Review the high school's NCAA-approved core-course list.
Build study habits that protect future options.
Keep an unofficial transcript for family records.

Recruiting priorities

Create a simple athlete information sheet.
Begin exploring college levels and majors.
Clean up public social accounts.
Do not confuse generic camp marketing with personal recruitment.

Freshman checkpoint: Can a family explain the athlete's position, academic direction, development goals and current level without exaggeration?

Sophomore year: become evaluation-ready

Sophomore year is when the recruiting system should become organized.

Football priorities

Update film as meaningful varsity footage becomes available.
Identify the traits coaches evaluate at the athlete's position.
Record accurate testing results and retain the testing source and date in family records.
Build a development plan with the high school coach.

Academic priorities

Review core-course progress with the counselor.
Track the core-course GPA separately from the overall GPA.
Research admissions ranges at possible colleges.
Address academic weaknesses before junior year.

Recruiting priorities

Build an initial list across multiple levels.
Create a complete recruiting profile.
Learn how to write a coach introduction email.
Attend events for development or evaluation only when they fit the plan.

Sophomore checkpoint: Does the athlete have current contact information, a working film link, accurate academics and a first school list?

Junior year: create qualified conversations

Junior year often brings urgency. The answer is not to message everyone. It is to improve targeting, material and follow-up.

Before the season

Confirm the athlete's target levels with honest coach feedback.
Update the profile, academics, measurables and schedule.
Research position needs and staff contacts.
Create reach, realistic and foundation school groups.

During the season

Save strong clips and update film when the new version is meaningfully better.
Share concise updates with programs already contacted.
Track coach responses and requests.
Keep academics stable during the busiest part of the year.

After the season

Build the strongest current highlight video.
Ask the high school coach to review it.
Send targeted introductions and updates.
Plan spring and summer camps around schools that fit.
Review NCAA Eligibility Center tasks and transcript needs.

Junior checkpoint: Can the athlete name the programs actively evaluating them, the evidence of that interest and the next action for each one?

Senior year: manage opportunities and expand intelligently

Senior year is not the time to stop recruiting yourself because early attention did not become an offer.

Early senior year

Send updated film and the season schedule.
Follow up with every realistic program already contacted.
Ask coaches directly what they still need to evaluate.

Expand the list if responses are weak.
Keep Division III, NAIA and junior college possibilities in view where appropriate.

As opportunities develop

Confirm whether interest, an offer or a roster opportunity is specific and actionable.
Request the complete financial picture in writing.
Compare admissions, academic programs, cost, staff, roster and campus fit.
Submit applications and financial-aid documents by their actual deadlines.

Before enrollment

Complete required Eligibility Center tasks.
Ask the counselor to send final transcripts and proof of graduation where required.
Confirm admissions, housing, financial aid and team reporting instructions.
Keep training and communication professional.

Senior checkpoint: Does the family understand the written terms, total cost, roster pathway and non-football fit of every serious option?

A simple year-round rhythm

No matter the graduation year, use the same four-part cycle:

Evaluate: What does current film, academics and coach feedback say?
Update: What information has meaningfully changed?
Communicate: Which programs need that update, and why?
Adjust: Should the school list, camp plan or development focus change?

Repeat the cycle after each season, semester, new film release or credible evaluation.

What parents should own—and what athletes should own

Parents can manage deadlines, travel, finances, research and document organization. Athletes should increasingly own coach communication, profile accuracy, follow-up and the questions they ask.

That balance prepares the athlete for the independence college football will require.

Important timing reminder

NCAA recruiting calendars regulate when and how college coaches may recruit. They do not mean an athlete must remain passive. Athletes can research programs, build materials and initiate appropriate communication, but families should confirm current sport- and division-specific rules through the NCAA and the college's compliance staff.

Build the system once, then keep it current

The RepMax Player Profile gives the athlete one place to maintain film, academics, measurables, contact details and updates as the timeline advances.

Begin with the information you have. Improve it every season. A current profile is more useful than a "perfect" profile that never gets finished.
