College Football Recruiting Rules and Calendar Explained

A recruiting calendar controls what college coaches and institutions may do during defined periods. It does not tell an athlete when to stop improving film, academics, research, or thoughtful communication.

The mistake is memorizing one date from a graphic and treating it as universal. Football rules vary by NCAA division, subdivision, athlete circumstance, activity, and year—and they change.

What to do next

Identify the relevant division and football program, open the current official NCAA calendar, and record only the dates that affect the athlete's next action. Use the Recruiting Calendar Action Planner to separate official dates from family tasks.

RepMax athletes can manage visits, camps, combines, games, deadlines, and other events in the athlete calendar.

Learn the four period definitions

Period	General meaning	Family question
Contact period	Certain in-person contacts, evaluations, and communications may occur under applicable rules	What may this coach do with this athlete, at this location, on this date?
Evaluation period	Coaches may evaluate athletics or academic ability, while off-campus face-to-face contact may be restricted	Can the coach evaluate the game or school without an in-person recruiting conversation?
Quiet period	Off-campus face-to-face contact and evaluations are limited, while some campus or communication activity may still be allowed	Is the planned campus interaction permissible and confirmed by compliance?
Dead period	In-person recruiting contacts and evaluations are generally prohibited, though some written or electronic communication may remain allowed	Does the planned visit or meeting need to move?

These are educational summaries. The exact rule, exception, and permissible activity come from current NCAA legislation and institutional compliance.

Start with the correct rule set

Before reading dates, confirm:

NCAA Division I, II, or III;
FBS or FCS when Division I football rules differ;
high school, junior college, four-year transfer, or international status;
the exact activity: call, text, email, evaluation, off-campus contact, official visit, unofficial visit, or written aid;
whether an exception or signed written agreement changes the situation.

One family's accurate answer may be wrong for another family.

Know what the calendar does not measure

A coach appearing at a game during an evaluation period does not prove the coach came only for one athlete. A permitted text does not prove an offer is coming. A dead period does not mean the athlete should stop preparing.

Calendar periods regulate activity. They do not certify interest, admission, aid, roster need, or future playing time.

Build two calendars

The official-rules calendar

Record the source, division, sport, period, effective dates, date reviewed, and compliance contact. Use the NCAA page or current manual—not a cropped social graphic.

The athlete-action calendar

Track games, film updates, transcript tasks, camps, visits, coach follow-ups, school research, application deadlines, and family decisions. Many of these actions continue regardless of whether in-person college recruiting is restricted.

Fictional composite scenario: Rowan misreads a dead period

Fictional composite example. Rowan's family sees “dead period” online and assumes coaches cannot receive email. They stop all communication and cancel a planned film update.

The family checks the NCAA's current definitions and asks the target school's compliance office about the specific activity. They learn that the restriction centers on in-person recruiting contact and evaluations for that circumstance; applicable electronic communication may still be allowed. Rowan sends the requested film update without claiming the calendar guarantees a response.

Questions to ask before spending money

Which division and football calendar applies to this program?
Is this visit official or unofficial, and is it permissible on the planned date?
Who at the school confirmed the visit and itinerary?
May the coach evaluate at this event under the current period?
Is the invitation program-specific or a broad event promotion?
What happens if the calendar changes after travel is booked?

How RepMax supports the work

RepMax lets athletes manage recruiting events and dates in the athlete calendar. It does not interpret NCAA rules, automatically update official recruiting periods, approve visits, or certify permissible contact. The NCAA and each college's compliance office remain the authority.

Use the calendar to ask better questions

Do not try to become a compliance officer from a chart. Identify the correct rule set, confirm the specific action, and keep the athlete-controlled work moving.

Sources and editorial notes

Division III does not use the same FBS/FCS sport-specific recruiting-calendar structure: its current manual contains recruiting restrictions in Bylaw 13 but no football contact, evaluation, quiet, or dead-period calendar. Families should confirm a planned activity with the Division III school's compliance office.
